Accelerating hard at 20 mph in 3rd or 30mph in 4th would have made most cars 'pink' in the days before 'knock sensors' were invented and linked to the engine management system, which retards the ignition to minimise the noise. (In the olden days this noise sometimes indicated the need for a de-coke.) OK, so here is the deal. There have been a number of people, including dino1426 and myself, that have noise coming from the right side of the car. It sounds like it is coming from the back, but is most likely from the front (suspension?). It happens when going over speed bumps and bumps in the road, not necessarily pot holes though.

GM Knock Sensor. Knock sensor problems are common on 1999-2007 Chevy Silverado, Express Van, Tahoe and Suburban trucks. Of course, this means that the GMC Sierra and Yukon of the same years have the same issues.

Mar 28, 2005 · Clunking Noise When Accelerating - posted in Technical Section For MK1 & MK2: When I accelerate I always get a clunking noise from the front end of the car. It's as though there is a backlash in a linkage or something. Has anybody else had this problem? My car is a 2.0ltr HDi.
